This project was challenging, due to the compact size of the room and the stairway ceiling coming up under the basin, as shown in the images. It was complicated further by the customers wanting some insulation on the walls and the high cistern being brought low, both of which reduced the available space – and the bath was already narrow, so the space had to be absorbed elsewhere.
Designer Derek’s solutions began with installer Martin building up the low wall to the right of the basin. This made the basin a more useable height and gave more space for the pipe work below. Although there was no room for a vanity unit, he designed in a shelf for toilet rolls (in blue – a feature colour that the customer requested, picked up by the radiator). The cistern move freed more space for a mirrored wall cabinet, which also opened up the room visually. A bath screen that folds away into the bath space gave elbow room when using the toilet, and using Corian for a worktop enabled an integrated basin – the smallest Corian make – so avoiding messy joins and giving clean lines. Corian was also used for the window sill.
In addition to this, the false walls added some extra insulation and a niche for toiletries.
